GlobeMed at Duke partners with Salud Sin Limites in Siuna, Nicaragua to improve the health of adolescents and youth.

Who We Are // GlobeMed at Duke

Founded in 2010, GlobeMed at Duke is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We partner with Salud Sin Limites (Health Unlimited) in Siuna, Nicaragua to improve the health and wellbeing of the communities of Siuna.

Our Partner // Salud Sin Limites (Health Unlimited) in Siuna, Nicaragua

Salud Sin Limite Nicaragua ("Health Unlimited") is part of the International Health Unlimited network (now called "Health Poverty Action"). SSL works in the Northern Atlantic Autonomous Region (La RAAN) of Nicargua in the north-east of the country vwith indigenous communities that have been historically marginalized by the central government.

La RAAN has some of the highest rates of inadequate housing, poor water supply, overcrowding and low education levels in the country. In an attempt to improve the health and infrastructure of this region, Salud Sin Limite engages local youth in education around sexual health, leadership development, advocacy training and "radionovelas" -- weekly radio shows which discuss a diverse set of health and social issues the communities face.

Our Project // $1500 to build community gardens in the community of Las Quebradas

While Salud Sin Límites' projects span everything from building latrines to improving maternal health, this year GlobeMed at Duke is working to fund a community garden in one of Siuna's more rural and impoverished communities.

The two-acre huerto comunitario will provide a means to healthful, organic nutrition for the families that participate as well as a source of income from selling surplus at the local market, and participation will be supplemented by workshops on health and nutrition. The garden project aims to engage all levels of the community, particularly students, teachers, and administrators from the local school, such that there is a sense of unity and common purpose amongst all involved.
