The Global Women's Water Initiative is a dynamic partnership between A Single Drop, Crabgrass and Women's Earth Alliance.
The Global Women’s Water Initiative is a joint initiative that equips local African women leaders with technology training, business skills, networking support, and seed funding to launch income-generating water service projects across Africa.
GWWI hosted the West African Women and Water Training in Kokrobite, Ghana on Feb 24-March 2, 2010 where 30 grassroots women leaders from Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Togo spent a vigorous week training in sustainable water technologies, capacity-building and project development. They gained the ability to
- design and implement a water service project from start to finish;
- create right livelihoods and teach others to do the same;
- develop long-lasting support networks with other women water advocates
Technologies introduced at the training included rainwater harvesting techniques, composting toilets, solar CooKits used to pasteurize water, BioSand Water Filters for household level water treatment, and portable water-testing kits. We are thrilled to share the stories of these inspiring women and the challenges they are facing everyday, and the skills they have learned at the training that have provided them hope for the future of their communities!
BUT THE WORK HAS JUST BEGUN!
For the next year, the women will return to their communities
- submit a project proposal and action plan they developed at the training
- receive a seed grant of $1500 to launch their water project
- receive on the ground site visits and customized refresher trainings in their communities
- access virtual web-based mechanisms for continued peer support
- access to additional funding and private foundations
- pairing with global peers specializing in issues of water, policy and development
GWWI supports all participants to apply their training and draw upon their support network to launch water service projects that have the potential to be income-generating.
