Dear friends,

If you are reading this you know me pretty well and know that I work for CASA Minnesota - an organization that recruits and trains volunteer advocates for abused and neglected children. What you may not know is that I was a volunteer advocate - a guardian ad litem - for 12 years before I took this job.

As a guardian ad litem, I saw firsthand the fear and trauma children experience when they are removed from their homes and placed in foster care. They didn't do anything to cause this upheaval in their lives, but they are the ones who will suffer dearly. Research tells us that children with a volunteer court appointed special advocate (guardian ad litem) will receive more services and will move out of the foster care system faster. Even more importantly, the child will have someone in the courtroom speaking on their behalf, telling the judge what is going on in the child's life and what the advocate believes is in the child's best interest.
