ARLP's Get Your Fix! fairs will reduce the number of homeless pets, especially those most overpopulated in local animal controls-pit bulls.

The dog in the photo above is Amora.

When Amora was taken in by ARLP she was about 13 years old. Before coming to ARLP, Amora's life had consisted of living in someone’s basement and being bred-she had had more puppies than any dog ever should. After coming to us, Amora spent the rest of her natural life lavished with love, wonderful food, soft clean bedding and those other creature comforts that make life that much better. Every dog should be so lucky.

This year, ARLP has the goal of preventing more Amora stories - dogs being bred in basements, in backyards and oops litters of puppies. Each spring ARLP receives way too many pleas asking us to take in full litters of pit bull puppies. A Rotta Love Plus will be undertaking an exciting new endeavor in 2011 to accomplish this goal.

This summer we will be holding a series of vaccination fairs/spay and neuter clinics for in-need dog owners.

Our “Get your Fix” fairs will be in neighborhoods in North Minneapolis and St. Paul where our inner-city friends are big on pit bull love, but often low on resources and owner support.

Get Your Fix! fairs enable us to reduce the number of homeless and abandoned pets in our community by providing spays and neuters to a targeted neighborhood. We target neighborhoods with an abundance of needs - where resources and financial means are not often available to sterilize and vaccinate pit bulls and Rottweilers. We want to be where the community needs us the most. Our Get Your Fix! fairs are not just about altering pit bulls and Rottweilers but about being a resource for a community in need of help, and an advocate for dogs who face long odds of surviving.

The overall goal of our Get Your Fix! fairs is to reduce the number of abandoned and homeless pit bulls and Rottweilers in local animal controls that are ultimately euthanized. We know that proactive spay/neuter programs are the only way to end pet overpopulation, especially the overpopulation of pit bulls.

Attendees at the Get Your Fix! fairs have the opportunity to receive:

  • A free spay or neuter for their Rottweiler or pit bull (spays and neuters are available by appointment only)
  • Free DHPP and rabies vaccinations
  • A microchip for only $10
  • A free, sturdy collar or leash (in exchange for handing in an old, fraying leash/collar or a heavy chain). High-quality, robust collars (flat buckle or martingale style) and leashes reduce the number of runaways that end up being picked up as strays by Animal Control, and having a sturdy leash/collar set instead of a thick chain around the neck prevents the kind of negative headlines that damage the reputation of our cherished breeds.
