Germantown Hardknocks youth program have been making a strong impact in the community of Germantown Maryland with positive youth development through academics, sports and life skills. The after school program that was held at Roberto Clemente Middle School was a success. The program increased students grades, attendace and life skills. Students learn new coping skills to handle negative and positive situations. Students learned how to engage better with teachers, students and parents. Students improve their social behavior skills. Students were set in small groups and discuss their fears, aspirations and challenges that their face with on a daily basis. Students participate in role plays and workbook activities about peer pressure and life skill issues. The athletic deparment have produce over 200 to 300 youth basketball players. The program have 25 youth that attend college for sports and academics. Many of our youth start at the age 9 until their 18. Youth who participate in our sport program normally make their middle and high school basketball team. Some of these youth have their first experience playing basketball outside the state of Md by traveling on our Amateur Athletic Union travel basketball team. These youth are giving the opportunity to play state to state in National competitions, with getting the exposure of college coaches that will help them get recruited. Our program have help turn many youth away from a life of crime, drugs and gangs. We have partnership with the Montgomery County Police Department(Germantown District), Montgomery County Collaboration Council, Excell Beyond the Bell, Street Outreach Network (HHS) and Roberto Clemente Middle School. Our partnership have improve community relationship building and figting crime. Our gang prevention and intervention model has decrease gang enrollment among at risk youth in our community.
