Provides financial support to Sullivan's Island Elementary School.
Friends of Sullivan's Island School was formed to provide financial support to Sullivan's Island Elementary School in the areas of teacher salaries, instructional and educational supplies. Each school in the Charleston County School District receives a mandated amount of funding based on certain strict formulas; however, that allocation does not meet the needs of our students. Friends has helped bridge the gap between being a good school and a great school by providing funds to: -maintain smaller class sizes -lower overall student-to-teacher ratios -offer a rigorous and innovative curriculum -hire, retain and develop highly skilled faculty and professional staff, ensuring more special area teachers for foreign language, science, arts, music and computer technology. Specifically, Friends provided funding for computer and foreign language instruction (Spanish), as well as a portion of the Guidance Counsler and interventionist. We anticipate needing in excess of 130,000 to fund needed teacher salaries alone for the 2013-2014 school year, and have projected a total fundraising budget of $160,000 to include teacher salary supplements and needed supplies.
