We are dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty for children through education. In Liberia, West Africa, we serve 400 children.
We have a challenge before us and we need your help!
Who We Are
Liberia Mission Inc., the primary project of Franciscan Works, began in late 2003, just as years of civil war were coming to an end in the West African nation. In just 9 years, we have gone from serving just three orphans to nearly 400 children and youth. Liberia Mission alleviates poverty and promotes transformation by providing quality education, a loving home, and life skills training for children and youth so that they may become capable, responsible, and compassionate citizens and future leaders of Liberia. Our program has three main components - academic, residential and spiritual. The St. Anthony of Padua School provides a Catholic education for over 380 students in kindergarten through grade 9. The residential program provides a nurturing home for 110 students who would otherwise have difficulty accessing educational opportunities. The St. Michael the Archangel chapel is a gathering place of worship and spiritual formation for the children, youth, and staff of Liberia Mission, Inc. and the surrounding community. Our program at its core is a community development effort that will one day provide tangible economic benefits. The objective is to produce educated adults of character and integrity who can support themselves and their families and contribute to their national economy through a productive career.
Will you get our Back(pack)s?
These are funds we sorely need because right now Franciscan Works and Liberia Mission stand at a crossroads. Which way we turn will most definitely impact the futures of our mission children, for good or ill.
We won't deny it, the need is critical. Can we still strive to give our youngsters the best possible futures? Can we succeed in raising this generation of war survivors out of poverty? If we stall or stumble now, then the answer is no. As sure as the sky is blue the majority of these children will join the ranks of the millions of Liberians stuck in poverty at the bottom of the economic ladder. But with your help we can continue to move these youngsters in the right direction and give them a chance to make something of themselves in a place where such a hope is still a rarity.
From Three to 400 - Nine Years of Incredible Growth
In just nine short years we have grown from caring for three small orphaned souls to educating more than 400 students-over 100 of them live on the mission grounds and depend on Liberia Mission for food, housing, education, and love. We do our best to fulfill all of these needs; however, only the last one is free.
The challenge before us is great but not impossible. Success is our only real option; you see, Pee Wee, Esther and Handful, our original three orphans, are still with us. These are the children whose dirty, empty hands we first grabbed on to in the displaced persons camps outside of Monrovia in November of 2003 and have never let go of since. We don't intend to let go now either. Your generous assistance will make sure that we won't have to.
