Let's work together to preserve bog land in the Sax-Zim Bog and build a Birder/Photographer Welcome Center. We need your help!
What will your donation help accomplish?
Join us in our mission to PRESERVE, PROMOTE & PROTECT the Sax-Zim Bog Important Bird Area that we have come to love. We also hope to enhance the experience of people who come to The Bog to enjoy its natural beauty and fascinating flora and fauna—especially our northern owls.
In addition to purchasing and preserving bog peatlands, we would like to continue to make the area more birder- and photographer-friendly with the construction of a small Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center.
As bird guides, we’ve all seen the need for a facility in the heart of The Bog where birders and photographers from around the globe can come together to share sightings, photograph at the feeders, warm up, buy souvenirs, learn about the natural history of black spruce/tamarack bogs and even use an outhouse! UPDATE September 2013: Construction has begun! We hope to be open at our Owl Avenue site by Christmas 2013. Stop by for a visit!
Why are these goals URGENT?
As Sax-Zim birders, bird guides and photographers, we’ve seen amazing things up in The Bog over the last 30 years, but we’ve also seen many changes. Logging has destroyed many a fine birding area, changing the character of the place for decades to come. We have explored a number of ideas about how to spare key birding areas from this fate, and we have come to the conclusion that the best way (maybe the only way) is to purchase land to keep it safe.
