Green Gecko kids flood relief initiative; a collaboration with Siem Reap's Hotel and Tourism industry.

6.12.11-FLOOD RELIEF PHASE 2

Due to the overwhelming response to our Phase 1 endeavours, we have now begun Phase 2 of the Flood Relief Project. The children once again were invited to Hotel de la Paix to make a second proposal to their collaborative partners. Here is an extract of what they wrote:

As you know, when we went to the villages we saw everything destroyed.

We felt sad and pity for the families. We really wanted to help because they are our people, and are a part of us. We felt proud that we could work with you as our collaboration partners.

Having your support made us feel warm. We know our heart is feeling the same and that together we can help more people.

We are happy and proud to say we reached ONE THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED AND SEVENTEEN FAMILIES!!!

This means we provided:

  • Twenty two thousand kilos of rice
  • Eight thousand litres of clean water
  • Six thousand, three hundred and twenty cans of fish
  • And one thousand, seven hundred bottles of soy sauce.

We were able to achieve this for one reason only- because we all worked together as great friends to help others not as lucky as us.

But our help is still needed.

Now the waters have gone down, there is still so much work to do.

Because of the floods many things have been destroyed. Many people have no job to do, they have finished their rice and some families have lost their house, while many have been damaged.

The kids and our Gecko dad rem have been brain storming in our living values class ways we think we can help:

There are 3 main ways.

1. give the famers new seed to replant their rice fields – this can only happen in areas that still have enough water for the rice to survive because rice needs a lot of water

2. provide micro businesses to those families not close enough to water to replant rice. These businesses can be: chickens, vegetable and pigs

3. fix the houses that have been damaged or destroyed. Put new roofs on, walls, make them higher.

So there it is, we are pleased to say the proposal was kindly and enthusiastically accepted by the collaborative team and Phase 2 began on Sunday 4th December with a house repair. More projects will happen every weekend while funds permit.

Please stay tuned for more info as it happens :-)

Only last night I told a young friend, who wants to volunteer, about Green Gecko, and how the children are aspiring to careers that will help others - teachers, nurses, doctors etc. and ... emergency relief and aid workers! Great work, all of you! Tania, I hadn't opened my emails for a few days so sorry for the delay in responding. xxx
