Over 1 million people are affected by floods in Eastern Sri Lanka. Support our relief efforts.
“The disaster we are facing is second only to the tsunami,” said Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, General Secretary of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement of Sri Lanka. A torrential monsoon rain has affected Eastern Sri Lanka. About 30 people have lost their lives and over 1 million people, equal to that of the tsunami, have been affected by the floods.
Sarvodaya is distributing food packets and immediate relief supplies. Working closely with local government agencies, Sarvodaya is assessing needs and allocating resources wherever possible.
The most urgent need is for clean water and sanitary conditions, as the wells that became contaminated during the flooding must be purified and sanitary facilities must be restored, re-built or replaced.
Many villagers still require assistance with shelter. Pregnant women, new mothers, children and the elderly need special attention.
$10 can provide enough food to feed a family for two days.
We need your immediate support.
