Children Are Friendly Visitors too!

Every week, Faith In Action volunteer, Julie Malyon and her children go to the Red Wing Health Center to visit Sheila Vogland 97. Julie said this is a special time to spend with her three children, Caleb 10, Alyssa 8 and Seth 3 ½. In the summer all three children go visiting with her, but only Seth goes during the school year. When school started last year Alyssa said with sadness, “I won’t be able to go visiting with you.’

Sheila is a former school librarian and loves to read to Seth and help him with his ABC’s. He also plays small games with her. Seth is so comfortable when visiting the Health Center that he helps give wheelchair rides.

Julie said that her name means youthful spirit; and after meeting Sheila, said that she truly represents that youthful spirit despite her years.

Julie first heard about Faith in Action through her church. She had been thinking about a service opportunity which she could share with her children. It has been such a rewarding experience that she would like to challenge and encourage young parents to become Faith In Action friendly visitors. It has also been a positive way to introduce community service to the children. Her children’s grandparents live far away and this is a way for them to be with the older generation. Julie started visiting Sheila in her home in July 2007 and continued the relationship after Sheila’s move to RWHC. One of Faith In Action’s goals is to help people to remain independent as long as possible. Positive personal interaction with others can help meet that goal.
