Help the EcoVoce Ensemble raise ecological awareness with innovative vocal music concerts inspiring new attitudes about care of the Earth

The EcoVoce Ensemble, a trio of soprano, piano, and flute, combines a passion for music and nature to create its acclaimed concert programs about nature and the earth. The “Eco” part of the name comes from the word ecology and “Voce” is the Italian word for voice. EcoVoce serves as a musical voice for ecology, giving voice to those that have no voice such as birds, trees, animals, and oceans.

EcoVoce invites you to join us on our musical journey to help children, families, music-lovers, and the general public make a difference in preserving our environment. Through concerts and outreach programs, our music brings an awareness of the fragility and beauty of nature in a way that engages our audiences. Concerts feature original music by living American composers that are woven together with multimedia including poetry, art, and, video. This creative use of music combined with other arts offers audiences a unique and uplifting concert experience.

“EcoVoce is that rare breed: a group of talented performing artists who care so much about the world that they use their musical gifts to raise environmental awareness. The joy in hearing them perform includes seeing audiences moved to care about our future and take action. I know of no other performers who do this as well!”

-- Mike Tidwell, Chesapeake Climate Action Network

EcoVoce is passionate about music, understanding the powerful impact it can have on human hearts, inspiring audiences to rediscover the wonders of nature, transforming attitudes, and helping people become better stewards of our Earth. EcoVoce is deeply committed to creating a concert experience that includes the performance of relevant music written especially for the ensemble. “Icebergs,” a song scored for soprano, piano, and singing bowl by Jane Tavernier, has mesmerized audiences with its beautiful yet haunting expression of global warming. Composer Winifred Hyson wrote “Another Way to Be,” based on a poem by Ursula K. Le Guin, as a joyful and insightful expression of experiencing nature. Audiences come away from an EcoVoce concert with a renewed awareness of our environment.

“I particularly enjoyed the variety of music which is presented in an ingenious and thoughtful way around the compelling theme of nature. EcoVoce concerts are very imaginative and have attracted a devoted and appreciative audience. In this way, EcoVoce enriches our community.”

-- Philip Cave, Former Music Director, Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill

The EcoVoce Ensemble has touched the lives of many school children in Alexandria with a concert program that teaches ecology. Celebrate Nature, EcoVoce’s outreach concert program for young audiences, helps students explore the wonders of nature through songs that reveal human relationships with nature, the uniqueness of other living creatures with whom we share our Earth, and how nature inspires our hearts and minds. Musical demonstration, props, the appearance of the Monarch butterfly, and the amusing conch shell “bugle band” help strengthen students’ understanding of our environment.

“EcoVoce’s high artistic quality combined with hands-on involvement enticed our children into enjoying the music and broadening their horizons about the natural world.”

-- Campagna Kids Program, The Campagna Center

The performing artists who make up the EcoVoce Ensemble include Denise Freeland (soprano), Susan Hayes (flute), and Narciso Solero (piano). All artists have extensive performing experience in this country and internationally. They have performed in over 75 EcoVoce performances together in venues ranging from nature centers and schools to recital halls and outdoor amphitheaters.
