ECONOMIC GROWTH CENTERS INC

Economic Growth Centers, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit community development organization. We were established in 1984 as the Whittier Community Development Corporation and changed our name on May 7, 2008 to Economic Growth Centers, Inc. to better reflect our geographic service area. We have a long and proud history of providing real estate development, incubator services, property management, bookkeeping, financial and technical assistance, as well as loan origination with several community-based loan funds.

Beginning in 1984, we started developing numerous properties on Nicollet and Lyndale Avenues. In the 1990s, we began a process of partnering with private developers to spur economic development in distressed areas of the city. We’ve worked to provide facilities, project, and property management. The Mercado Central is one such successful model of the support and development by us in partnership with other organizations.

From 1998-2001 we worked with Ray Harris and Dave Jasper in developing the Sears site on Chicago Ave and Lake Street. We were also actively involved in the development for Somali immigrants with Basim Sabri, a private developer. Over 25 Mideastern and Somali businesses are now providing 65 new immigrants with employment on a commercial/industrial site that had long been a problem for the neighborhood.
