Tell the EPA to cleanse our drinking water with more testing, screening and other safety measures!
What is This Bill All About?
I support the House bill to increase the safety of our drinking water supply. The bill will help ensure that there is more testing and screening of our water. I believe it is extremely important for everyone to be involved in water safety, we all drink it, cook and clean with it and need water to live.
The two parts of the bill that are important to me are the efforts to reduce lead, and strengthen the Endocrine Disrupter Screening Program.
Why is Lead so Bad?
This is pretty obvious, lead is a toxic metal that is known to be dangerous to health. 10-20% of children's exposure to lead is through drinking water! Lead exposure can cause damage to the brain, kidneys, nervous system and red blood cells. Testing and screening of water will reduce harm to your body, and I'm all for it! (and you should be too, your body will thank you!!)
What is an Endocrine Disruptor?
Now, I do not have a background in science, and am not going to assume that you know what an endocrine disrupter is. Lets break it down.
The Endocrine System is our bodies' system of glands and hormones. To put it very simply, its a regulatory system that effects things like growth, mood, the nervous system, reproduction and metabolism. These things are important and I bet you would agree that they should not be disrupted!
So, an Endocrine Disrupter is a chemical that acts like a hormone, but actually interrupts the real hormones of the system. That's a bad thing, I don't want to add chemicals to my body that get in the way of my bodies' systems, that's illogical!
What Can I do To Help Keep Our Water Safe?
You can take a stand for water safety through support and action with the Ocean River Institute! Help them keep chemicals out of our water!
