DIVA strengthens connections, shares knowledge, and builds community through the visual arts. Welcome to our campaign to Sharpen our Vision!
Founded in Eugene, OR in late 2003, the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit visual arts organization, sparked an interest in the visual arts among members of the downtown community. Over the past 10 years, DIVA has displayed the work of over 900 artists, screened hundreds of films, and offered numerous classes ranging from screenwriting to figure drawing.
The DIVA Gallery produces several community art exhibitions throughout the year, and oversees four film-related projects with: A weekly"Behind the Lens" Seminar, The "Teen Video Challenge," "The Shaggy Dog Project," and The "OpenLens Film Festival."
Here is a modified plan that addresses our most immediate need - RENEW LEASE OR SEEK A NEW LOCATION.
Funds are needed to renew the lease of our current space and prepare upgrades to our downtown visual arts space, which would increase the versatility and efficiency of the DIVA Gallery AND the ability to jury film submissions by three of our four FILM programs.
Here is our shopping list of needed upgrades:
Total package: $50,000
Design, build and manage a downtown visual arts center. $5 million
As downtown Eugene continues to evolve into a thriving cultural center, we collectively envision the inclusion of a visual arts center - a place where community can gather to view exhibitions, purchase works of art by local and regional artists, enjoy refreshments and food, watch award-winning films in a theatre designed to accommodate film festivals, learn through participation in workshops and lectures, and provide space for mentoring emerging arts leaders, who are committed to growing a cultural industry.
We already have the expertise to hire a paid arts professional to manage the operation of such a visual arts center, who will make significant contributions to continue the legacy of creating signature events that would bring visitors back to experience the treasures of Lane County, making this region a favorite annual vacation and business destination.
As we look at our rich menu of our upcoming community arts and cultural events, let us not forget that much of our signature events have been subsidized and organized by talented, creative leaders, who often donate their time and talent to create meaningful visual arts and cultural experiences. There is great potential for a phenomenal season and everyone is invited to participate and contribute to our local economy. Let us invest in our talent.
Let us invest now in creating a large space/place where emerging artists and arts leaders can learn and gain experience in cultivating a vibrant cultural industry – where it is possible to make a living and contribute to our tax base – where downtown Eugene is viewed as a major market. Ultimately, if we are serious about being a great city for the arts, culture and outdoors, these cultural elements should be in the heart of our downtown. At the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts, we are ready to participate, alongside business and commerce, in such a creative enterprise.
