Common Hope received $20,000 in matching funds for our health care program. Thank you to everyone who donated to the cause. The match has been met! Gifts in excess of the $20,000 will be greatly accepted and used toward our annual health care budget that totals more than $200,000.

Access to health care is scarce in Guatemala. Treatable and communicable diseases are still highly prevalent and major causes of death. Struggling to afford it, families often delay seeking medical care until health conditions have severely advanced. When this occurs, a family’s limited budget may become overwhelmed by medical bills, one more reason a child has to drop out of school to earn money. To address this, Common Hope provides health care for our students and their entire families.

Our health care program provides basic curative and preventive health care, preventive health education, dental care, prenatal education, a pharmacy, and nutrition services. In Antigua, we run a medical and dental clinic that serves affiliated families from the 17 Antigua valley communities where we work. In New Hope, affiliated families have access to a clinic built by Common Hope and run by our health care partner, Sangre de Cristo. In San Rafael, families have access to a clinic run by El Faro, another nonprofit health care partner. In San Miguel Milpas Altas, families have access to the community clinic which we also partner with and support.

Our health care activities have had a big impact during the past year by screening and treating patients and providing preventive health education. Our clinic averaged 712 medical visits every month, and by September we had filled 22,368 prescriptions for our patients. Our dentists saw an average of 180 patients each month, and clinic staff conducted a total of 4,614 screenings for things like cervical cancer, diabetes, and nutritional deficiencies.

Your gift will support these and more health care related activities that help children and families to stay healthy and strong. Thank you for your support!
