Help me support at-risk children in homeless shelters and encourage the value of reading!!

As you all know, this is the time of year we remember what we are most thankful for. I'm thankful for the continuing support my friends & family have given me and the roof that I have over my head. Unfortunately last year, roughly 1.6 million individuals experienced homelessness*. Of that 35% were homeless families. It is imperative that the children in these families have access to books which will enrich their growth. They are our future politicians, teachers and business owners! This season while you are giving thanks, please help donate to The Reading Connection and our future leaders =)

About: The Reading Connection is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and families by helping them create and sustain literacy-rich environments and motivation for reading. This mission is accomplished by

  • Volunteers who read aloud to children at shelters and community centers
  • Donations that provide children with free, new books to keep
  • Workshops that help parents encourage reading and literacy development
  • Trainings of family support workers who promote the importance of reading.

Supporting our communities starts with the children. Improving the chances of success for children in crisis starts with reading. A love of reading can make all the difference in academic success or failure for students.

Many children living in shelters are under the age of six, a critical stage in language and literacy development, and many of these children have no books in their lives.

Research has shown that reading aloud "is the single most important activity of building the knowledge required for the eventual success in reading."

The Reading Connection (TRC) fills the gap for children who have limited exposure to books and reading
