The Brown Boi Project--committed to cultivating men and masculine of center womyn of color to be empowered, healthy, beautiful leaders
My involvement with the Brown Boi Project began with my participation in one of their leadership development retreats in March, 2011. Though active in various social justice organizations, I have always struggled to find my place as a masculine of center person of color. The leadership training provided me with the tools and skills necessary for success, not only in my life of activism, but also in my personal well-being. After expressing interest in further developing my fundraising skills during the leadership retreat, I was given the opportunity to participate in a grant-writing workshop receive communications and fundraising training. As a result, I have further developed those skills and I continue to work with the Brown Boi Project as their Development and Communications Coordinator. As a brown boi, I was also provided with one-on-one personal coaching for three months. My access to this resource was essential in navigating some major life changes that I’ve gone through this year. It is often argued that success is as much about access to resources and opportunities as it about raw talent and intelligence. The primary goal of the BBP is to build leadership and economic self-sufficiency among economically disadvantaged young masculine of center LGBT people of color, a historically oppressed and grossly underserved population within the LGBT community. In my case, it has succeeded in that goal. I am proud to be a brown boi and I am committed to taking advantage of every opportunity BBP gives me, so that I can continue to succeed in my own life and in helping the Brown Boi Project carry out its mission.
