I'm running in the 117th Annual Boston Marathon to support the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts! My goal is to raise at least $4000 in donations to benefit the Girl Scouts, an organization that has been such an important part of my life, and the lives of millions of girls around the world.
In my 13 years as a Girl Scout, not only did I learn skills such as fire building, knot tying and orienteering, I also gained something much more valuable, strength of self. Through the many community service projects and activities for younger Girl Scouts my troop organized I learned that I had the skills and the power to make a difference in my community and in the lives of others. Recently, I had the opportunity to present an award to a troop for their generous efforts of providing blankets to residents at a local nursing home. After the presentation, the leader of the troop approached me to thank me not only for the award presentation but also for being an inspiration to her troop. As it turned out her girls had been some of the younger Girl Scouts that my troop had organized many camps and activities for. It is wonderful to know that my actions inspired them and they are now the girls providing service and inspiration to others. It also solidifies my belief in the Girl Scout organization and its mission to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
The funds I raise for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Boston Marathon team will help to support the Girl Scouts Get Moving Health Initiative. With one in every 3 children ages 2-19 nationwide overweight or obese, the Girl Scouts recognize the importance of providing girls with the tools they need to maintain good physical and emotional health. I have always been a proponent of health and fitness. For my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I organized a Health and Fitness Fair for underprivileged families in my local community and as a marathoner I have seen firsthand the benefits of healthy lifestyle. Not only does it lowers risks for diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol it also improves self-esteem, increases alertness and reduces anxiety and stress, which can lead to improved academic performance.
Health and fitness have been part of Girl Scouting since its start in 1912. Every year, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts proudly offers quality indoor and outdoor programming to girls at its 14 camp properties and year-round program offerings. These programs educate girls on health, fitness and wellness in a variety of ways as they experiment with new sports and activities and keep moving all year long. With your support, the Girls Scouts will be able to continue these programs as well as create new ones to expand their reach and impact.
Running the Boston Marathon is a dream come true for me so I am very excited to be running for an organization that is so close to my heart and would greatly appreciate your contribution!
