As a member of the Board of Directors at Second Sense, I would like to share with you the great work this dynamic organization does for people with vision loss. Second Sense focuses on its members rather than on their disability, helping them move beyond vision loss.

Our individual services offer a great alternative to people struggling to adjust and continue to live independently. We expand our members' view of their own abilities; helping them see the possibilities and learn the skills to realize their goals. Our members not only gain the courage and skills to venture from their homes, they embark on new ventures from starting their own business to skiing down a mountain.

Please join me in making a donation to Second Sense to help people live life on their own terms, not life defined by a loss of vision. Our goals for 2013 are:

• Continue to build our orientation and mobility training -- teaching people how to use a white cane so they know where they are, where they want to go and get there safely.
• Expand our counseling services for those struggling to accept their vision loss. We are adding some classes combining art and therapy – from mask making to improvisation.
• Introduce a new Apple training curriculum for the iPhone and iPad – two versatile tools that offer built-in accessibility in a mainstream device at a reasonable price.
• Continue to increase our Independent Living Skills training for small groups and individuals. This includes creative classes, such as quilting, regional cuisine cooking and some new training options especially for men.
