Team Running for Cover is running the 2013 Boston Marathon to raise funds to support MFNE's mission of education, prevention and support.
I'm running in honor of my grandfather, Irving Mande, aka Papa. Papa was diagnosed with melanoma long before I was born and given six months to live. In the face of such tragedy, Papa reinvented himself as the strict, veggie-loving, fitness-crazed disciplinarian that I would come to know and love. While I may have thought that wide-brim hats and daily jogs (even on vacation) were crazy, he knew better. He knew how precious life can be and how difficult the fight can be to hold onto it. If he were alive today, he would be as proud of my running the Boston Marathon as anything I have ever done.
But even beyond his satisfaction with my athletic and fitness goals, he would be proud that I am doing it for such a worthy cause as the Melanoma Foundation of New England (MFNE). He spent my childhood warning me of the risks of sun exposure, the very same work MFNE is doing today.
The statistics are staggering, even without the personal connection. 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years of age. Yet every one of us (myself included) still rationalizes catching some sun without bothering to lather on the sunscreen. There is so much work to be done, educating the public on the dangers of sun exposure and working to support those who are struggling with skin cancer.
Ultimately, skin cancer is a preventable disease, but only through advocacy like that being done by MFNE. I am running 26.2 miles to help bring awareness to this disease, and to honor a man who spent his life as a grandfather doing the very same thing. Please join with me in helping to support the Melanoma Foundation of New England in this incredibly important goal. And please share my page with others by clicking the share button on the right side of the page!
Since it's inception in 2006, Running for Cover has raised over $1 million to support MFNE. I am thirlled to be a part of this team for the 2013 Boston Marathon.
Help me cross the finish line by donating to my fundraising efforts. Together we can help reduce the incidents of Melanoma in the New England area.
