Know Pittsburgh? Know Football? Know the Steelers?
Then you know Hines Ward.
Well, at least you know him as the unequivocally talented, passionate athlete and leader in the game of professional football.
Now, get to know another passion of this gracious humanitarian:
The Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation: a cause Hines Ward launched that is dedicated to assisting mixed-race children who face discrimination in Korea and to the betterment of inner city and underprivileged youth in the Pittsburgh and Atlanta areas through literacy programs and services that better equip children for achieving success in life.
Helping Hands For The Holidays: during the month of December, help Hines, help children. For every dollar donated up to $20,000, Hines will personally match the donation dollar for dollar. By donating now, you are helping Hines help at-risk children here and abroad.
A little background...
March 8, 1976: Hines Ward is born in Seoul, South Korea to a Korean mother and an African American soldier. Having persevered through many trials as a child in a single parent home, he now is dedicated to helping children who come from a similar background.
In 2006, after winning the Super Bowl MVP, Hines made a return trip to South Korea on a mission to encourage political and social reform. His focus was on mixed-racial children and the discrimination they endure. And focus he did - with a $1 million donation to launch the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation.
Hines’s efforts off the filed have not gone unnoticed. In September 2010, Hines Ward was appointed to President Barack Obama's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. He is one of only sixteen people appointed to this prestigious board
Hines has a passion for all children. When Hines scores a home game touchdown, he is known to search the stands for a child wearing his #86 jersey. He gives the touchdown ball to that child as a sign of support and gratitude. Now, it is our turn to give an “86” back to Hines and to his Helping Hands Foundation.
Helping Hands for the Holidays - Donate:
....or whatever amount you choose. Lend a Helping Hand for the Holidays. Your contribution today, to the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation, will help:
- to provide programs and services to better equip children for achieving and handling success in life.
- to improve literacy among children.
- to target biracial discrimination, especially as it occurs among the children of Korea where Hines continues to travel every year to mentor kids.
- to bring Korean children to stay with American families for a week each football season, helping them to build self confidence and to turn negativity into something positive.
This is bigger than the Steelers, bigger than football, bigger than you and I. This is about charity, this is about change, this is about children.
