Robert, a lawyer in Uganda, is acting on his deep passion for helping and empowering people in rural communities in his country. Ever since his childhood, Robert has witnessed the huge disparities between rural and urban areas. In rural Uganda, access to justice is almost nonexistent; in particular, women and children suffer hardships such as rape, harsh treatment and property rights abuse. Robert realizes that rural villagers are marginalized because they lack the basic education to communicate their needs. As a JusticeMakers Fellow, Robert has established two Community Criminal Justice Monitoring Communities at the local level to connect villagers with legal resources. The Committee members are trained in basic criminal justice skills. They also conduct workshops and awareness campaigns to inform indigent villagers of legal resources, if they experience injustice. Additionally, Robert has established an information center in his community, where villagers can access the contact information for nearby legal aid lawyers, police stations and courts. Robert needs your help to reduce the barriers most rural villagers face while seeking access to justice. ……………………………………………………………………………………………… Every day, IBJ Fellows like Robert take huge risks for the defense of legal rights around the world. Their programs are under constant threat of running out of money. Despite the risks they face for their courageous work, they cannot create significant, long-lasting legal changes without adequate funding and resources.
