The reality of living is that every individual finds life stressful from time to time. But if an individual is unable to experience relief from that stress, the unique qualities of the human spirit can wilt and become wounded. In that wounding by life circumstances, one can experience emotional upset, confusion of identity, problems with quality of life, difficulty finding direction, health problems, and difficulty with relationships. Stressors inflict various degrees of injury to our unique identity: Core Self. These injuries cover a range of experiences: from a bully in the neighborhood to a buddy in the hospital; from a veteran of military conflict to a victim of child abuse; from an experience of great success to a tragedy of great loss. Traditionally, mental health services have looked for what they determine is the illness – what is wrong with the person – while ignoring the reality that the person was hurt, not sick. Based on the belief that every individual has a unique identity endowed by their creator, Heartland programs are designed to help each individual resolve the injury and then go on to thrive. By empowering communities to develop and strengthen their resources to meet the needs of hurting people, communities themselves will then be able to serve the range of hurts: from the young parent whose spouse is deployed in military duty to the child who grows up in an environment of abuse and torture. Our belief: Getting people back to their Core Self will result in stronger communities. Our mission: Training (from grassroots to paraprofessional to mental health professionals) to provide intervention in times of crisis and need.

Programs

Training and consultation are key components to the services delivered by Heartland Initiative/Heartland Trauma Institute. Training programs seek to address our mission with the following constituents: 1. Community-at-large. Grassroots education: to know and understand one's own Core Self by knowing one's Creator; by knowing one's Core Self, understanding others in their distinctive Core Selves. 2. Community leadership. Identification and development of programs to strengthen community. 3. Paraprofessionals. Training to provide intervention in times of crisis and need. 4. Mental health professionals. Continuing education. 5. Therapists and clients. Consultative programs to intervene when people are stuck in their healing process. Our Summer/Fall 2009 webinar series offers eight(8) different topics. Each seminar: • is 90 minutes in length; • is priced at just $50. • offers 1.5 CEUs*; and • is presented by Heartland's Founder and Executive Director: Lowell Routley, PhD. *Heartland is NBCC-approved for CEU credit.
