Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! Our group, Continental Crossings, is a group of five students (including myself) from the University of Iowa and we are trying to raise funds to build a footbridge in Nicaragua next summer.
In June 2010, Continental Crossings traveled to Zambia, Central Africa, and built a 54 meter bridge across a stream that was completely impassable during the rainy season. The following year in June 2011, the team built a bridge in Guadalupe, Nicaragua.
Our current Continental Crossings group is now involved in designing another pedestrian bridge in the community of Jucuapa Occidental, Nicaragua. We will be traveling there in November for a site assessment and to develop relations with the community. Over winter we will be designing the bridge and traveling next summer for its construction. The members have in-country construction experience which will be vital in the assessment and implementation trips.
Peace Corps volunteer, Ryan Hubbard, says this about the 2012 bridge site- "I'm currently living about 10km south of Matagalpa City in a little community called Jucuapa Occidental. There is a river that runs though the center of our town, dividing the community and making access out of Jucuapa impossible during much of the rainy season, leaving nearly 200 people stranded for days on end. This limited access has been detrimental to every aspect of life in Jucuapa Occidental. It prevents access to the secondary school in our neighboring community, which has resulted in many of our youth not continuing their education. There is no access to medical facilities after heavy rains, so it is very common for people in town to die when they get sick due to lack of health care. Day to day life is slowed down and access to food and supplies are pretty much at the mercy of the river. I’ve been hoping to build a bridge in this community, it seems that your knowledge and resources within Bridges to Prosperity could possibly make this a reality for Jucuapa Occidental."
The success of the 2012 project, as well as others in the future, will depend on the support of people like you. Please support us in any way that you can.
