Community Mentor Connection provides caring adult mentors to youth in need of guidance and support in Freeborn County, Minnesota.
Imagine you are a 12 year old girl, struggling in life. You don't feel as pretty or as smart as your friends. You are confused about the difference between what your mother tells you and what your friends say. Some friends are getting into trouble trying to be "grown up." You don't want to do those things, but you don't want to lose your friends either. If you told your mother, she would freak out and not let you be with them. You wish you had someone to talk to.
When the Community Mentor Connection coordinator introduces you to your mentor, you aren't sure you are going to like her. What if she's like, mean or something? But after a few meetings with her, you find out that she's pretty cool and if you tell her something about your friends, she doesn't freak. She just asks you what you think about it. Your Mom and sister really enjoyed those chocolate chip cookies that you made with your mentor and next time you are going roller skating.
Mentoring is about being friends. Even though there is an age difference, both mentor and mentee benefit. Both learn new things about themselves and the world.
Community Mentor Connection needs men and women volunteers. If you are interested, contact Carolyn Smith at 877-232-8399 or starsforkids@yahoo.com. If you can't be a mentor, please make a donation to help others become mentors and to support them in their mentoring relationships.
