Alternative Spring Break 2011!

During spring break, hundreds of young adults and student volunteers from across the United States trade swim trunks for tool belts and team up with United Way to make a meaningful impact in communities across the country.

18 College Students locally and across the country are invited by The United Way of El Paso County (UWEPC) to participate in the second annual Alternative Spring Break (ASB) in El Paso, Texas, March 11-18, 2011.

The United Way will collaborate with the Lower Valley Housing Corporation (LVHC) to build homes for families served by the LVHC. Students participating in this program will have a life-changing opportunity to see first hand the benefits of their volunteer work in the lives of members of the El Paso community. Students will also participate in teambuilding exercises, and other activities including a tour of El Paso.

During the ASB Program participants will stay at the Ysleta Lutheran Mission. The home building will take place in Horizon, TX.

The Students will participate in the following activities: Framing new homes, creating foundations for new homes, pouring and laying concrete, painting, roofing, trim, and digging. The students will work with basic hand tools (hammers, saws, screw drivers, etc.) including some work with power tools (drills, saws, etc.) Professional contractors will be on hand during the entire project to assist students.

The 2011 El Paso ASB participation fee is $150. The $150 ASB fee covers all on the ground transportation once students arrive in El Paso, meals, lodging and program fees. By donating to this project you are helping another student participate in this program!

Please note that students will not participate in any activities that involve electrical wiring or installation, plumbing, heating or cooling installation, or work with sheet rock.

**Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a national initiative set forth by United Way Worldwide to engage college students in community service. The program began as an effort to provide immediate relief to New Orleans, LA and Gulf Port, MS after they were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Last year was the first year that the ASB was hosted outside of the Gulf Coast region.
