Boys & Girls Clubs offer kids a place to go every day after school to build character and have fun.

Never did I imagine when I volunteering at the 100th Boston Marathon that 16 years later I would be training, have a number and raising money for the Boys and Girls Club. I remember people asking me, while loading them onto the bus to head out to Hopkinton; "Why are you not running this?". Quite clearly the answer was; "I am not a runner, Enjoy the race I will be routing for you!".

Running has never come easy for me. Some little ache or pain always seems to rise to the surface on every run. I am approaching this race with caution, taking the advice of medical professionals to make sure I can cross the finish line!!! I really want to raise money for the kids!

I was on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Newton for 5 years and there are many inspiring stories of kids that the club has helped, inpired and motivated to do great things. I personally had the opportunity to meet some of the kids, see the club at work and they are really doing great things -- "It all about the kids".

The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club was created as more than just a place for kids to hang out. The Club helps children develop a positive self-image, educational and social competence, a sense of well being, and a moral compass by providing activities that meet the unique interests of elementary, middle, and high school youth. The programs and services of the Club are designed to instill feelings of accomplishment and self-esteem that come from the process of making choices, being involved, and developing life skills.

We serve children in five major program areas: Character & Leadership Development; Education & Career Development; Health & Life Skills; The Arts; and, Sports, Fitness & Recreation.

Recognizing that all youth are at risk, our mission is to enable young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The Club creates opportunities for children to transform themselves in positive ways. You can help cultivate this growth supporting my 2012 Boston Marathon goal of $7,000 by giving to the Boys & Girls Club of Newton.

Thank you! I will keep you updated on my progress.
