The Lazarus Ministry has been in existence since 1992 and is part of the Outreach Ministries at Christ Church.The primary purpose of the Lazarus Ministry is to help meet the challenge of community needs for compassionate assistance and care for our neighbors. The Lazarus Ministry provides assistance to those in the City of Alexandria who need transportation, food clothing, financial, material, and spiritual assistance. This is done by one-to-one counseling with guests who come to the Church seeking help during Lazarus hours on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. One of the most prevalent needs is help with transportation. A $10 fare card can make or break someone's quest for independence. With a $10 fare card, an individulal can arrange his or her own transportation to proactively seek the help he or she needs. Medical care is possible. A job interview becomes possible. Lives change with a $10 fare card! One person who benefitted from a metro fare card was Tom Smith. Tom was homeless and referred to the Lazarus Ministry by the Department of Human Services. Tom needed transportation to chemo therapy treatments, four days per week for three months. Metro fare cards provided Tom the opportunity to receive the life saving medical care he needed. One $10 metro fare card provides a round trip to the VA hospital. As a community of service, Christ Church strives for justice and peace among all people, respceting the dignity of every human being. This goal is pursued by members of the congrgation and others within the community as a large, local population centered here volunteers countless hours to assit those with a variety of needs. The Lazarus Ministry provides tangible ways to bring dignity and justice to those living on the fringes of the City of Alexandria.
