Project to support the construction of a monastery in a Tibetan settlement in India.
Background
The Surja District of Chattisgarh in central India is a remote region where seven Tibetan refugee camps exist. There are approximately 2,500 people here isolated and virtually forgotten by the rest of humanity. There are no medical facilities, no established schools, and no paved roads. Touched by such appalling conditions, Tulku Tsori Rinpoche devoted his work to see the construction of a monastery in this settlement which would bring shelter, education, healthcare and hope to this community.
Vision
In 2005, construction of the Monastery began. Upon completion, the monastery expects to welcome 200 children each year- most of whom are orphans that come from as far away as the borders of Tibet and Nepal. Ultimately, the monastery will be able to house, feed, clothe and educate up to 700 children. The school will also offer education to all children living in the refugee camp. It will be a full facility that provides accredited graduation to its students, and hugely benefit not only the Tibetan refugees, but also locals of this isolated area. The Monastery will also include the first medical clinic in the region where physicians will receive patients. As of today, Tibetan refugees have almost no access to medical treatment and lack of proper healthcare is now their main cause of death.
Benefits To All Humanity
During his life, the Buddha gave advice to many people on ways to avoid distraction from following the spiritual path. The Buddha never actually taught a set of vows for monks or nuns, but these have been derived afterwards by Buddhist Masters from the teachings of the Buddha. Monasteries have proven to be absolutely essential in preserving the Buddhist teachings and practice. The YTDR Monastery will uphold traditional Tibetan Buddhism and practices through teachings, meditation. It will also provide short and long-term retreats for visitors and the people of native regions. It’s ultimate aim is to help all human beings, eliminate poverty and suffering, and create a better life for generations to come.
The progress or decline of humanity rests very largely with educators and teachers, who therefore have a tremendous responsibility. Today, those who in the past received knowledge from their Lamas are now spreading the words of compassion, loving kindness and Buddha teachings throughout the world. These children being educated in the YTDR Monastery will follow in the same path liberating many more people in the future.
