Carpenter's Shelter, Inc.
Carpenter's Shelter is Northern Virginia's largest homeless shelter, serving over 1,000 individuals, families and children annually.
Carpenter's Shelter began on a cold night in 1982 when the pastor of Blessed Sacrament church in Alexandria found a man sleeping in the doorway of the church and another sleeping in his car. He realized the need for overnight shelter and opened up the basement of the church with ten cots and two volunteers. In 1988, we officially became Carpenter's Shelter. Over the past 23 years, we have provided food, shelter, and safety to thousands of men, women and children in Alexandria and Northern Virginia. But most of all, we have given individuals who would have otherwise remained homeless and forgotten a chance to build lives for themselves and their families.
Carpenter's Shelter provides a continuum of care for our clients. Our programs include:
These programs simply could not be offered without the generous support of Northern Virginia area residents and businesses. Over 83 cents of every dollar donated to us goes directly toward improving the lives of homeless and at-risk children and adults in the DC Metro area.
Join us in our mission to end homelessness through shelter, education, guidance and advocacy. Our mission will not end until homelessness ends, because no child deserves to be homeless.
