Help children who need it the most experience the joy of learning through play and exploration at Port Discovery Children's Museum.
One wonderful day, two bright, energetic brothers visited a children’s museum. Like many of the young visitors, they were captivated by the Wonders of Water exhibit, enjoying the splashing, working the Archimedes screw, playing with boats. Then they turned to the Block Dock, where children can answer the question “Will it sink or will it float?” As they played with the blocks, the younger brother, 6 years old, turned to his mom and said, “Float!” “Yes!” she responded, her heart swelling. Her autistic son had just made a connection with a concept he had never before been able to grasp.
Later that day children arrive excitedly, ready to participate in Port iscovery’s after school enrichment program–ArtVentures–where they are learning about India. In Studio Workshop, students are busy creating their own Parcheesi boards using traditional Indian block printing. Earlier, they explored Indian culture through storytelling and music. Now, two students are absorbed in an intense game. A shriek escapes the mouth of one of the players. He has won the game! The smile doesn’t leave his face as he leaves the Museum. He and his classmates look forward to learning more on their next visit.
Encounters like this happen every day throughout Port Discovery. We use purposeful play to foster a lifelong love of learning, curiosity, and optimism about the world, encouraging children to look forward to learning in school. Unfortunately, many children across our region aren’t given the proper resources and tools to be able to have imaginative experiences in their everyday lives. Often lacking access to the necessities, the opportunity to experience the joy of learning in a world-class museum is beyond their grasp.
But thanks to the generosity of our donors, every year Port Discovery opens its doors to tens of thousands of children, parents, and teachers who could not otherwise afford to attend. But the demand is growing.
Research shows that early learning prepares children for success in school and life. Neuroscience has confirmed that the first years of life are essential to future learning and that purposeful play is critical for social, emotional, and intellectual development.
Your gift will help children learn through play and exploration in environments designed just for them as they experience playful, interactive programs that promote intellectual, emotional, social and physical growth. Please donate today.
