CAFETY is a member-driven advocacy organization that promotes and protects the human rights of youth who are confined in residential program

VISION:

The members of CAFETY envision the day that no young person is harmed in the name of treatment and when youth are empowered to be equal partners in their own care.

VALUES:

We, as CAFETY members have been moved to act by our having suffered egregious human rights violations in residential placement. Others in this community alliance have come to know the suffering of those who have been confined in such programs and are moved to act as well.

1. As individuals who have been placed in some type of residential setting as youth, we acknowledge that present policies to address the needs of youth struggling with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges are inadequate in both scope and reach.

2. We advocate for measures that would effectively help youth and families remain together and find treatment in their community.

3. We recognize that some youth are inappropriately institutionalized and seek to prevent this type of institutionalization and segregation from the community.

4. We also believe that, in the event youth are placed in an out-of-home setting appropriately, the basic human rights of youth must be protected by the state.

5. Appropriate care includes protection from harm, and access to treatment that is transparent, collaborative, and non-coercive. It also means holding providers accountable for the outcomes of the treatment that they provide.

Thank you Chris, Brian, and everyone for being there for us when one of the students at my school was abducted. You were able to educate us so we could try to fight for his release. And you made us aware of an industry against teens' human rights.

CAFETY needs to have more specific and clear goals. I was hoping to find things like we need this law overturned and to do it we need this many signatures/money to get a ballot initiative. Or we want to launch x law suite but we need such and such to get it started. Or we x people to protest at y's campain rally because he supported these institutions. Or we are promising x money to the political campaign of y if they speed up passage of some law. Or we need to start this recall campaign against some judge and to so we need blank. Or we want to get publicity by getting on some talk show but to do so we need to write so many letters to the show. I think if you did this there would be much more support. If I have learned anything from my experience with the efforts to legalise weed I know all of the attempts to change things by raising general awareness are very inefficient. However when we started going after very specific legislative goals much more progress was made. I will donate even more if I start seeing this stuff.

Thanks for having this important organization. I wish I knew about you in 1990 when I was in Straight INC. I felt so very isolated at that time and did not know there were advocates fighting for youth. NICOLE E MCCARTHY LCSW

It's amazing there is a group available like this. Although a part of me wishes it had been around 20 years ago for me, I love the fact that I can be a part of it as it changes lives today.
