The Breed Street Shul in Boyle Heights is comprised of two historic synagogues and priceless Los Angeles history.
I was first introduced to this project by my good friend Tsilah Burman, now Executive Director of the organization overseeing the restoration of this important historic landmark. As a student of history, I had known about the history of Boyle Heights, and its past as a hub of Jewish culture in the early 20th century, but was not aware that there still existed a testament to this past in the Breed Street Shul. Once she told me of her new project, I made sure to drive by and take a look. What a treasure!
I was pleased that this piece of the Los Angeles history was still standing. As I read more, and asked Tsilah more about the project, I learned of the mission of the restoration, and how the site will eventually serve its current neighbors as a community center, while doubling as an educational experience into the Jewish past of Boyle Heights.
This is an incredible project that I am more than excited about. I love this City, and its vibrant past. If you feel the same, please give to this important project.
