I'm raising money for Summer Search, a great organization that provides low-income youth with mentoring and internship opportunities.
I am proud to join the Summer Search Boston Marathon Team for 2013. In addition to raising money, I hope that my efforts will raise awareness about the organization.
Through my work life, I have seen how placement of low-income students in internships is beneficial both to the student and the employer. Too many of these students have closed paths to career success, and too many companies lack diversity of thinking and experience among their workforces. As a former inner-city city school teacher, I have seen firsthand the challenges that good and ambitious kids can face in joining the mainstream path to the American dream.
The 2013 Boston Marathon will be my first "major" marathon. I was all set to run the 2012 NYC Marathon, but mother nature had other ideas. After NYC was cancelled, I wanted to put my 850 miles of training in 2012 to some use. So I completed the inaugural (cold and hilly) Myles Standish Marathon in Plymouth MA, on 11/18/2012. My time was 3:56:44, not bad for an old guy first-timer!
Completing a marathon was a milestone in my recovery from a complete rupture of my right Achilles tendon in 2009, in what was (I presume to be) the final game of my over-30 league basketball career. You learn a lot about yourself and your body when you make the decision to get off of the couch.
