Books For Africa
Books For Africa collects, sorts & ships books to students across Africa. The goal: increase literacy by ending the book famine in Africa.
“Books For Africa is a simple idea, but its impact is transformative. For us, literacy is quite simply the bridge from misery to hope.”
-Former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan
Dorcus, a primary school student in Northern Rwanda, loves school. She excels in her classes, and has big dreams for her future. Dorcus also happens to be deaf. A shipment of books from Books For Africa means that Dorcus and the rest of the students at her school now have access to a brand new library. For Dorcus, the library means that another barrier to her education has been broken down. Books enable her to learn and dream in the same way as her peers.
In The Gambia, students in Banjulinding Lower Basic School in Banjul are also dreaming. Ebrima Cham’s teachers say his school work has improved leaps and bounds since the school received a shipment of BFA books. Someday, Ebrima wants to be a philanthropist so that he can bring joy to children the same way BFA books bring him joy.
All over the African continent, Books For Africa provides students like Dorcus and Ebrima the gift of learning. We pump quality text and library books into schools where many students have never before held a book, and into classrooms where children once huddled around shared textbooks.
We believe that ending the book famine in Africa is an imperative pursuit because a culture of literacy creates a culture of hope and possibility. Time and time again, studies show that quality education is a cornerstone of development. When children have books, they can read, learn and grow.
At Books For Africa, we work every day to send books to schools that need them most. We are the largest shipper of donated educational materials to the African continent in the world. We have shipped more than 27 million books to 48 different countries since we were founded in St. Paul, MN, nearly 25 years ago.
But we cannot do it alone.
We need your help to continue our work of ending the book famine in Africa. Just 50 cents sends one book to Africa. When placed in a school or community library, 50 students can read that book. That’s just one penny per impact.
How many books can you help us send?
By donating to BFA on Give to the Max Day this year, not only will you be helping end the African book famine, but you will get to see how much our staff cares about our cause… enough to dance in public.
You can see our staff and intern do the Macarena, but only if you donate TODAY for Give to the Max Day!
