Bill W. And Dr. Bob, The Play...
The show is ready to go—all we need now is to reach our goal of $250K by December 31st. Make your tax-exempt donation right here, right now. And tell your friends.
Then, watch the above videos—the play at the 75th Anniversary Convention in San Antonio, and two other productions.
Revenues from the play will fund a non-profit national touring company to college campuses to deal with the epidemic of binge drinking, and scholarships to Hazelden.
Janet Surrey and my 2007 Off-Broadway, award-winning hit play about the relationship between the two men that led to the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, and their wives Lois and Anne who founded Al Anon Family Groups, is on its way back to Off Broadway. Since the 2007 run of 155 performances and almost five months at the 350-seat New World Stages, it has been performed all over America, to sold-out houses and rave reviews, breaking box office records in 35 states.
In 1986, as doctors working with alcoholics and addicts, Janet and I read this astonishing story—not just about two drunks who were going to die and together found a way to live, but more—a great American success story about the suffering of isolation and the healing power of good connection. Our dream—and our service—has been to find a way to run this show in perpetuity so it becomes an icon in New York, and to use the revenues for a national non-profit college tour to combat the epidemic of binge drinking, as well as for scholarships to youth for treatment at Hazelden. Now, thanks to donations, our dream is about to come true. Everything is in place to launch this, but for the last $250,000 (of total $450K) in donations. We need to reach our goal by end of December 2011, to open in 2012. Our not-for-profit status is in the spirit of the AA Traditions.
We are bringing the show back to New York in a new model: the production will be completely supported by tax-exempt donations to Hazelden Treatment Center. No investors. With no investors to pay off, in a 199-seat Off Broadway theatre, once the play is financed it will be self-supporting, and run for many years. We ask for your help. Any donation is welcome. “Producer” credit given for donations of $40,000 and up.
