Seasons Greetings,

I have been a friend of Legal Advocates for Abused Women for almost 15 years now and was honored when they invited me to serve as the president of the board of directors this year.

Legal Advocates for Abused Women (LAAW) helps families get out of violent relationships. This year has been really rough for LAAW – one of the toughest in its 23-year history. With all the economic turmoil, they’ve experienced a big cut in their funding, and they’ve had to reduce their staff by half. But at the same time, domestic violence in St. Louis has dramatically increased. There have been 17 domestic violence-related homicides this year in the St. Louis area.

LAAW is on track to serve nearly 10,000 cases this year – enough to fill the Chaifetz Arena at SLU. The advocates and attorneys at LAAW are a truly dedicated group of people who are committed to serving every family they can during their greatest time of need, and I’m honored to be their friend.

This year, I’ve decided to add LAAW to my holiday gift list just like I would my other best friends. I look at it this way – if I give to LAAW what I would have spent on a gift to my best friend, just think of all the good it could do for so many domestic violence victims (and their children too).
