Avenues for Homeless Youth supports young people ages 16 to 20 as they transition from homelessness to stable, self-sufficient adulthood.
More than 2500 youth and young adults are homeless every night and on their own in Minnesota. And the numbers are growing. Wilder Research counted 46% more homeless youth in Minnesota in October 2009 compared to just 3 years earlier.
When youth come to Avenues, most have faced serious trauma and many have mental health and medical issues. When you are homeless, it's really difficult to stay in school, let alone succeed in school.
The good news - when youth access Avenues for Homeless Youth, they find the support they need to heal from their trauma and transition to a successful young adulthood!
Avenues for Homeless Youth operates three programs that provide safe housing and supportive services to homeless youth:
1) A shelter and housing program in North Minneapolis for 20 youth, plus one bed for nightly emergency use
2) The GLBT Host Home Program for the 20-40% of youth experiencing homelessness who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
3) The Suburban Host Home Program for youth in the suburbs of Hennepin County
Avenues also seeks system change - to eliminate youth homelessness through social justice education and organizing in the community.
