The international township of Auroville in South India was in the midst of Cyclone Thane’s direct fury, leaving a trail of destruction.

While the Matrimandir itself was not damaged, some branches of the Banyan Tree were broken off and in the Matrimandir gardens and around it, many trees fell down. Similarly, the gardens of Savitri Bhavan, the Visitor’s Centre and Bharat Nivas suffered heavily, though there was no damage to the buildings. In the Sadhana Forest and Sve Dam communities, all the keet houses were fully destroyed.

In the new Luminosity community, the louvers of the new building warped in the winds, leaving the glass windows behind it to face the full impact of the hurricane; many shattered. In the Samasti and Grace and Surrender communities, almost all beautiful ornamental trees fell down. In Madhuca, the tile roof of one of the houses blew off, while in Certitude, a couple narrowly escaped certain death by leaving the house a few minutes before a tree fell down on their house with a major branch landing on their bed.

At the Auroville beach communities, the situation was judged worse than the 2004 tsunami, with high waves compounding the damage caused by falling trees. The Auroville farms suffered heavily, with one farmer complaining that 40 years of work has gone with uprooted fruit trees and crops being severely damaged. In some of the Auroville forests, more than 70% of the trees have fallen.

The commercial units suffered as well. The office of Upasana suffered a direct hit from a falling tree, while the office of Auromodèle Atelier was narrowly saved with the tree falling in front of its entrance. In the villages around Auroville, the damage is no less. The landscape which Auroville has been at great pains to build over the last 40 years has been disfigured and mutilated.

In the evening of that day, when the storm abated, many Aurovilians were seen trying to find their way on roads covered by fallen trees and debris. “I got lost,” said a long-term Aurovilian, trying to get from the Surrender to the Dana community. “The road had disappeared.”

On December 31st, the work of clearing the main roads and making an inventory of the damage started. The sound of chainsaws could be heard all Auroville. Many Auroville youngsters and others were seen clearing main roads and pathways. Chainsaws being in short supply, residents were seen using ordinary saws and cutties, trying to clear the entrances and internal pathways of their communities.

Certitude was heavily hit, with most of the Eucalyptus trees that line the entrance road having fallen over. The well-known Eucalyptus Grove, opposite the turn to Samasti, no longer exists. Some of the Aurovilians living in the greenbelt had literally to hack their way out of the forest.

This is a state of emergency. Some communities suffer from the lack of water supply. There is no electricity. The electricity supply, which had stopped at the first signs of Thane approaching, will not be reinstalled for about two weeks with over 30 high tension and all low tension lines being destroyed. Some telephones work – but most do not.

Assessments of the damage start coming in. At a first rough estimate, the immediate emergency relief would need Rs 4-5 crores (approximately US $1 million). The estimates for long-term rehabilitation and restoration will run into a multitude of that. The detailed assessment will be undertaken after the emergency phase is over.

The Auroville community asks its friends and well-wishers for financial help which is most urgent.

Hang in there in this tough time of recovery! Hopefully it is also coming to be an opportunity to revitalize the sense of unity which is the deepest, and yet most difficult to achieve, aspiration.

FOREST GROUP UPDATE: For the forests, security is a huge priority. We need to secure our places. Please focus on clearing borders and bringing in timber for farther fields. If you are cutting wood, can’t bring it to safety and feel it’s at risk, call Security and ask Ramesh to include your area in its patrols. It would also be helpful to organize neighbourhood patrols. Throughout Auroville, some villagers are showing up claiming they are there to cut Poramboke timber. This is often illegal and untrue. Call Ramesh immediately and ask for papers proving the team is from the panchayat. Please also try to put together estimates for fence repairs and send to Glenn or Catherine. The Cyclone Response Team is developing a policy to help us deal with any damage Auroville trees may have caused to neighbouring lands. The next threat we face is fire. The forests will face extreme risk as the fallen trees and leaves dry. The Cyclone Response Team is looking into options to protect the city area; Jonah will investigate options for the forests. If you are interested in helping address the fire potential issue, contact Jonah. The financial impact of the storm is devastating to many forests. Yes, there is a lot of timber on the floor, but the forest will not have any other source of income for the next 10 to 15 years. In some places, the fallen timber will be enough; for other forests, it will be a huge struggle. Forests who depend on cashew will also struggle as many of the cashew trees are destroyed, and the crop won’t return to normal for a few years. Furthermore, much of what fell is not timber or is too small to be worth much. We won’t know the financial situation until a full damage assessment is conducted. In some cases, the aftermath was worse than the cyclone itself. There have been instances where people clearing for electricity, roads or poramboke land have done more damage to the forests than the storm.

Hi Every body, Survived.. Just reconnected my old solar system to have little current, not for long however! Vikas is a real disaster as all communities with big trees, only small trees survived.. Years of forestation work gone.. Our windmill just fully repaired is completely broken... roads and pathways blocked, no water, no electricity.. But a fantastic collective good will and energy to make every one feeling OK... Feels little bit like the old survival times when we had nothing, no electricity very little water, no food... but a lot of collective life! Our services are doing a fantastic job, running all day and some Water service even at night, so that roads are opening slowly, slowly, water pumped in every community with 2 generators late in the night... Long patient work Basic food is available in PTDC , solar kitchen, VC since Saturday, today also the Bakery brought us breads Mother Nature really got hurt and it is a miracle that no human got hurt even in the surrounding villages.. early morning you hear cutting, sawing, generators till late.. Every neighbour cleaning, sweeping, cutting, caring... The summer will be hot without trees, you already feel it now, sun comes straight in the house early morning! It has also become much warmer, when it was just starting to be nicely cool! We can see Houses and structures again, I even discovered new ones!! Your support in any ways will be most welcomed, even just emotional support! Happy New year Vani
