America SCORES is a high-quality, team-based program providing at-risk youth with the arts, athletics, and academics that will engage, enrich, and improve their lives. America SCORES builds teams through afterschool programs for over 8,000 low-income youth in 150 schools in 14 cities nationwide by instilling self-expression, physical fitness, and a sense of community. America SCORES accomplishes this in an innovative model combining poetry and spoken word, soccer, and service-learning year-round.

Here are a few highlights from around the country this year:

• In Seattle, an external evaluator looked at students’ writing samples and found a significant 60% improvement. In New England, elementary school students improved in English Language Arts by 7.8 points as measured by the MCAS Test.
• In Chicago, students improved an average 25.56% in physical health as measured by a cardiovascular running test. In Milwaukee, the number of students categorized as obese decreased by 9.5%.
• In Cleveland, 86% of parents believe that their child’s school attendance has improved because they don’t want to miss the SCORES programming. In DC, the number or students who like school and believe they will graduate increased by 18%.
• America SCORES teams designed and led 320 service-learning projects to improve the community like fighting depression, helping homeless, and cleaning rivers.
