We provide bus passes to homeless and low income folks. Transportation is critical for people to become self-sufficient.
About four years ago there was an article in the Sun Current paper about hungry people in the suburbs. The directof of Bloomington Loaves and Fishes said that many people needed help with transportation to get to the free meals and to get to work. The working poor needed help. The Work and Worship Institute was looking for an outreach program that would reflect our mission of connecting faith communities and work place communities. Providing bus passes was a perfect fit. We still distribute bus passes to Bloomington Loaves and Fishes about once a month through a lottery. We have expanded to provide bus tokens though a local church. Job seekers get tokens at St. Stephens. People get to treatment through Fahter's FIRST! and we help many more. Because we are a small program we can be flexible in meeting needs, which is an advantageat this point. Help us to keep this program rolling.
Personally I have realized that I am following in our family tradition. Many years ago my brother was killed as he was waiting for a school bus. My brother never caught his bus. For years my mother advocated for the big blue bus in Grand Rapids Minnesota. She is gone now. I still support our church bus program. Now with the Angel's Wings program we provide bus transportation to many more people to help them become more self-sufficient. That help can take the form of going to job interviews, going to work, going to treatment, going to a doctor's appointment or even taking the kids to the library.
I hope you wil help us keep this program rolling in 2012. Donations are great. Thank you! We hold a garage sale in May and are always looking for donations, volunteers and customers. We are looking for people to hold Sweet Support evenings, which are an evening of dessert, information and donations. We sell crafts at craft fairs and we have been gift wrapping at Barnes & Noble!
