Andy is running the half marathon (13.1 miles) and Edna is running the 5k. All donations will go towards EWB-UIC's Guatemala project.
I travelled to Cerro Alto, Guatemala in January 2012 with EWB-UIC. One thing that really stood out for me is that households only had access to water for a few hours each week. On a given morning or afternoon twice a week, each familiy would take their turn and fill their home storage tanks as full as possible before the water got turned off again. Sometimes the water pressure was too low and families only got their tanks half full.
The community of Cerro Alto and EWB-UIC members have worked together towards a common goal: To make it so tap water is always available, just like in the US. Cerro Alto has clean, ample natural water resources. It's just a matter of delivering the water more reliably. That way water doesn't stagnate in home storage tanks between filling times and grow dangerous bacteria.
