The Amazon Institute was founded on the belief our youth can change the world. We have inspired a new generation of philanthropistl

After years of volunteerism to preserve the biodiversity and cultural diversity of the Rain Forest, Joanne Stanulonis founded the Amazon Institute. The vision became reality as a result of a unique collaboration between the local people and an American educator. Together they built an ecological reserve and dedicated over 200,000 acres as protected land. Together they sent out mailers, spoke to the media and developed travel study programs, a reforestation program and an Adopt a Sloth program.

The Amazon Institute was founded on the belief that our youth can change the world. Given the opportunity to work on projects that address important issues, they are in a better position to lead social change.

The Amazon Institute’s focus is preservation of our environment, bio-diversity, and the culture and music critically linked to land. Our mission is preservation through educating and empowering youth who will in turn increase public awareness. We achieve this mission by providing low income and at risk students educational opportunities to learn, build life skills, develop leadership skills, build relationships and contribute to the community through service-learning projects that address important environmental and preservation issues.

Our organization provides direct services (including academic tutoring, college counseling, creative mentoring, service-learning and preservation projects) through each office’s Local Programs. The extended family of partner organizations and past participants in the U.S. and Brazil allow us to have a a greater impact in the communities we serve.

Today’s Ecological Reserve and Education Center demonstrate what a small group of caring and dedicated people can accomplish. The project turned out to be more indeed. It benefits all citizens of our planet in a larger and more extraordinary way.
