Hello all! I am running the Philly Half Marathon this Fall in support of a wonderful local charity called Mommy's Light. Please read below!
I hope to raise funds and awareness for this amazing Philadelphia area charity that helps so many children honor and remember their Mommy. As a Mommy to two precious daughters, I was naturally drawn to this cause. It is comforting to know that this charity is out there and that such a loving, honorable organization exists. Most of all I want to help spread awareness of this small but mighty nonprofit charity. Please spread the word about Mommy's Light and thanks in advance for any support for their cause!
Mommy's Light Mission:
"Bringing joy and comfort to children and teens whose mothers are terminally ill or have died by helping them keep alive traditions and simple pleasures they shared with their mothers."
Please take the time to read below for additional information:
Mommy's Light Lives On Fund® was incorporated in 1997 by Mary Murphy when she was being treated for metastatic cancer. Mary realized that her son, and any other child whose mother was terminally ill or had died, would benefit from continuing the traditions and simple pleasures they once shared. Inspired by Mary's vision, Mommy's Light is providing services to support the more than 626,000 maternally bereaved children and teens in the United States.
Mommy's Light’s Tradition Fulfillment℠ Services legitimize a child's need to maintain a relationship with a mother who is dying or has died, and provide a healthy vehicle to nurture these vital connections. There are times in a child’s life when grief may come rushing back. Certain milestones, birthdays, special events or holidays can be especially difficult. When children have a tradition that they can look forward to, it serves as a form of continuity.
Perhaps the best way to appreciate the positive difference that Mommy's Light makes in the lives of the children and families we serve is through their words.
"After my mom died, I thought that it was over for us to have any relationship, but Mommy's Light taught me differently and allowed me to remember my mother every year through a tradition. They were the first group of people to ever ask me, 'What did you do with your mother that you miss doing now?' They gave me hope that my mother would be remembered every year even though she has been gone for three years now."
"The last thing I wanted was for people to ask me questions about my mom because I was still sore and it just made me sad to say her name. But Mommy's Light wasn't just a charity group throwing gifts at us. They specifically planned a tradition that I used to do with my mom. My tradition helps me keep my mother in my head without it making me emotionally drained."
"My daughter and I continued to talk after our interview with Mommy's Light. Her face lit up with a big smile because she knew her tradition with her mother would continue. My feeling about your program is that it’s exceptional. My daughter's face was all I needed to see. Thank you."

Mommy's Light’s Outreach and Bereavement Education resources target specific audiences including school counselors, health care providers, parents and children. Materials such as our groundbreaking DVD, When a Mother Dies...Breaking Down the Walls of Silence, and “Warning Signs” brochure that outlines behaviors indicating when a child may need additional support, provide a foundation for people to understand and support the reality that grieving is a lifelong, adaptive process.
