A project of PRAIRIE RIDGE CHURCH
Join us in sharing the joy of giving Allan the gift of a college education!
UPDATE November 4, 2013
Allan will return to college in February 2014! He received a scholarship for half of his tuition with a college in his new city. He scored the sixth highest on the college entrance exam. At his new college he will be studying electrical engineering.
UPDATE! October 1, 2013
Allan is taking a hiatus from college to care for his mother. He has moved to a city much farther away from Lar Batista. He hopes to return to college and we will continue the fund to support him as needed during this hiatus and for when he is able to return to college.
Because we will now be sending funds directly to Allan, after October 1, 2013, contributions will no longer be tax-deductible.
For many years, Prairie Ridge Church in Ankeny, Iowa has sent teams of support to Lar Batista Biblico in Assis Chateaubriand, Parana, Brazil. Lar Batista cares for children of all ages when their parents are unable to do so or when they have been orphaned. Lar Batista was founded in 1976 by Bellarmine Fragoso (Pai – which is Portuguese for “father”) and his wife, Maria (Mae, or “mother”). The teams that visit Lar join the community to assist where they can with the upkeep of the grounds and the buildings; but most of all, they offer their time and love to the children of Lar.
A recent team included a teen-aged girl whose heart was touched by the children of Lar. She brought home with her many stories of the children she met, and she was particularly drawn to one special boy. This boy is named Allan.
When Allan was 9 years old, his father was murdered and his mother became unable to care for Allan and his younger sister, Jhenifer. The family lost their home, and Allan and Jhenifer were given a new home at Lar Batista Biblico.
When Allan graduated high school, he dreamed of going to college - a goal not attained by anyone in his biological family. Allan scored well enough on the college entrance exam that his tuition would be 100% covered at the state university. Unfortunately, Allan and Lar Batista are not able to afford the $500 per month living expenses for college that Allan needs. The state university has no dormitories for students, so students must find off campus housing and pay for their own living expenses.
Currently approximately 17 children and young adults are cared for at Lar, which is supported completely by donations. They receive no funds from their government. When Allan is home at Lar Batista, he helps to care for the younger children, helps in the kitchen, works on the farms that grows the food used in the home, and he assista with the home's administrative functions.
When the teen girl from the Prairie Ridge Church team told this story to her family, they were called to act. They wanted to help give Allan the college education he so desired, but they knew they couldn’t do it alone.
In February of 2012, a fund was established to allow Allan the opportunity to realize his dream and support his goal to graduate with a degree in computer science. With the help from this fund, Allan was able to find an apartment and enroll in school. Currently, Allan is doing very well with his classes and is making great progress towards graduation. This gives us such joy!
Would you please consider joining us in supporting Allan’s college education? Ideally, we would like for our sponsors to commit to all 4 years of Allan’s education. If that is not possible for you, all support is welcome! No contribution is too small! It is the collective efforts of all of us that will give Allan a college education!
Needed: $500 per month for 4 years of college.
