Operating the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility and Alexandria's only animal shelter, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria provides a safe haven for all creatures, great and small.

In addition to placing dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles, and other companion animals in loving homes, the League serves as a community center and educational resource for animal lovers in Alexandria. The League relies on more than 200 volunteers to help care for our homeless animals. Our Youth Volunteer Program, summer camps, and birthday "pawties" provide an opportunity for young animal lovers to learn more about sheltering, the companion animals we share our homes with, and the local wildlife we share the City with.

Only one-third of the League's operating budget is provided by the City of Alexandria, which means we rely heavily on the generosity of donors and supporters for the majority of our funding. We're thankful to be a part of such a compassionate and caring community, where our furry, feathered, and scaled friends are considered family.

Since 1989, the League has contracted with the City to provide animal control and care services for residents. Our four animal control officers respond to animal emergencies around the clock and keep citizens of Alexandria and our four-legged friends safe and healthy.

During the turbulent economic climate of the past few years, the League has seen an increase in the number of animals that come through our doors. We will always provide the best care possible for all animals and work diligently to find forever homes for all, but we can't do it alone. Your support is essential to maintain a top-notch facility and world-class care for all animals in need.

• Sarah's Fund - assists with expensive medical procedures
• Rosemary's Seniors Fund - assists older pets with health screenings and routine procedures

You can also apply your donation to a specific department or program, such as youth volunteers, summer camp, animal control, beahvior and training, etc.
