Aegis Living is partnering with The Somaly Mam Foundation on the Lotus House Project. A home to give wounded memories a safe place to heal.
Not for Sale
As a young girl, Somaly Mam was sold into sex slavery and raped daily. Somaly heroically escaped her captors but vowed never to forget those left behind and has since dedicated her life to saving victims and empowering survivors by creating the Somaly Mam Foundation.
The Foundation works to eradicate human trafficking, liberate its victims, and empower survivors so they can create and sustain lives of dignity. The Foundation supports survivor rescue, shelter, andrehabilitation programs globally with a special focus on Southeast Asia, where the trafficking of women and girls, some as young as five, is a widespread practice.
Be Their Light in the Dark
At Aegis Living, we care for the most frail and vulnerable in our society – the elderly. Each of our residents is treated with dignity and respect for not only who they are now, but we celebrate their full lives. Aegis has partnered with Somaly Mam Foundation to protect another one of our most vulnerable – hese young girls and women in Cambodia forced into sex slavery.
We believe that everyone deserves a chance to live a full life in a safe and nurturing home. Our goal is to build a new house with 24-hour security, emotional resources, a supportive staff and their peers to help heal their wounded memories.
The young survivors of the Somaly Mam Foundation have named the new house “Lotus House” because from the muddy and dark waters, a beautiful flower blooms. This mirrors their own lives and rising above the sadness, hurt and cruelty to blossom as stronger, confident women filled with hope.
Stop the Flesh Trade
The young girls and women have collaborated to build their dream home, filled with their peers and the medical and psychological support to recover. You can make this a reality.
- The Lotus House will house between 100-150 survivors and include a high-level of security to keep rescued girls safe from violent perpetrators who wish to re-enslave them.
- Once the girls are rescued and safe, they are given a medical and psychological assessment, evaluation of their educational and social development, childcare and legal assistance.
- There are no internal walls. After years of imprisonment, the girls prefer to sleep together without being confined and to support each other as only they can.
- The goal of the Lotus House is to feel homey and welcoming, surrounded by lush gardens and calming water features.
- A large classroom is in the center of the home will facilitate academics, English classes, rehabilitation and vocational training (such as hairdressing and tailoring) so survivors can one day reintegrate into society.
- The Lotus House provides a long-term solution to not only help these women get an education, learn a vocation or emotionally heal, but also ongoing medical and psychological services as needed and continued support up to three years once they leave Lotus House to ensure long-term success and holistic integration.
