A No Kill Minnesota

Animal Ark is working to make Minnesota a no kill state by compressively implementing a series of life-saving programs.
Animal Ark's Strategic plan to end the killing of animals healthy, adoptable animals in animal shelters has been implemented successfully in communities all over the country. This plan includes the following specific programs and actions: Reduce the number of animals entering shelters and impound centers Animal Ark works to reduce the number of animals entering shelters and impound centers using a multi-faceted approach that includes the following:
  • Spay/Neuter Initiatives - By preventing unwanted births, we reduce the numbers of animals entering shelters. Our programs, like the Twin Cities Pet Fix and Feline Feral Friends, focus resources on the animals most at risk. Additionally, we continue to promote the spaying/neutering of any pets adopted by shelters, impound centers or rescue groups.
  • Promoting Life-Long Commitments - Assist families in meeting the life-long commitment they make when adopting a pet by providing education and support in managing the issues animal guardians face in their lives. We do this through our web site, our radio show, by telephone and in person with families looking to surrender pets.
  • Educate About Responsible Pet Care - By educating people about animal issues, we help them make informed decisions on behalf of their pets; thereby reducing the number of animals being surrendered to shelters.
Increase the number of lost animals returned to their owners
  • Publish Stray Pets - There are more than 32 different impound centers in the Twin Cities Metro area. Few of them publish the stray pets held for impound. We can help fix that. Animal Ark has developed a central web page that lists stray animals held at pounds in the Twin Cities metro area. We encourage impound centers to use it.
  • Microchipping - Continue to promote microchipping as an important protection for companion animals.
Increase the number of animals adopted from shelters into new homes, because every adoption saves a life. Provide support and encouragement to other organizations to implement proven no kill programs Learn more by watching the video "Strayed".
