2010 Barn Dance Fundraiser

Sarah is eight years old. She has Cerebral Palsy and Ataxia. Sarah had a rough start in this world. At birth, she lost 2/3 of her blood volume, had no respiration or heart beat and was unresponsive for her first fifteen minutes. Miraculously, the doctors and nurses from Capital Health System's Level III NICU saved her life.

Sarah spent her first 30 days in the NICU. Each day was a test - could she breathe on her own, swallow, digest food, learn to suck. The results of each day painstakingly analyzed by her loved ones trying to get a glimpse of what the future held for Sarah. We could never have known then how amazing this journey would be with our beautiful and loving daughter.

As part of that journey, we were directed to Special Strides by Sarah's physiatrist from Children's Specialized Hospital. Dr. Armento suggested hippotherapy to help build Sarah's balance, strength and coordination. Sarah was not quite three at the time and not yet walking on her own. She cried for almost the whole first session. Everyone said it would get better and they were right. Now there are tears if we miss it! Sarah looks forward to seeing her Special Strides friends and regaling them with funny stories throughout her session.

Everyone at Special Strides has been amazing. There is a genuine concern for each child. Sarah has made tremendous physical progress - going from barely being able to stand on the trampoline to vigorous jumping! It is more than just the physical aspect though. As you spend time on the farm, you feel the warmth of the environment. It is unlike any other therapy experience - where else can you work on your core muscle strength while viewing the new born lambs!
